SIVANANDA YOGA
The class consists of initial relaxation, breathing exercises, warm-ups called Sun Salutations, then a set sequence of 12 basic postures before a final relaxation.
The relaxations are designed to calm the mind and body before and after the class and are very good for de-stressing. The breathing exercises work to improve lung and respiratory functions, cleaning and strengthening the lungs, boosting and purifying the oxygen levels in the blood and calming and focusing the mind.
The warm-ups, or Sun Salutations, are a sequence of 12 moves linked together in a flowing motion using the breath with each move. They warm up, stretch and tone the body and improve stamina.
The sequence of 12 basic postures are designed to strengthen, bend and stretch the spine in all directions. They improve circulation, helping to supply fresh oxygen-rich blood to all parts of the body. They stretch muscle groups and also work to strengthen joints and ligaments without strain or risk from injury. They also work to massage and stretch internal organs and generally improve all systems of the body.
The class lasts 75 minutes.
